Since spring 2023 a SOKRATHERM compact CHP unit with condensing heat exchanger, a heat pump and a peak load boiler supply a residential quarter erected on the former NAAFI ground in Herford with power and heat. The CHP unit type GG 50 6VRSB produces, as the core component of a heating center operated by the Lemgo municipal utility, 50 kW electrical and 107 kW thermal power. Together with a 33 kWth heat pump it produces 98 % of the annual heat demand, the 280 kWth gas boiler is needed only as a backup for especially cold days or for downtimes of CHP unit or heat pump.
The quarter is built in compliance with the high federal KfW-40 standard on a former military „NAAFI“ ground which had served until 2015 for the supplyment of the Brithish forces stationed in Herford. It comprises four multi-flat houses with a total of 45 flats, a double house and six single-family houses. In August 2024 the project was reported in the Heizungsjoural (heating journal), in 2025 it became one of the Cogeneration lighthouse projects of the German cogeneration association B.KWK.
